Conception Locale Alternative

Well, my daughter’s name is Olivia Caffeine. A bunch of us started discussing what our children’s names would be if we named them after the places we got engaged/married/etc… My husband proposed at this little cafe called Caffeine’s. It started as a joke and then stuck. People always give us strange looks and my mom asks if the next one will have the middle name “nicotine”! I admit pregnancy hormones probably had something to do with it but at least she’ll have a story when she’s older (if she’s speaking to us!)

Somebody Call John Waters

i was at a bank of america in fresno, california a few years ago…and as god is my witness, the young woman who was my teller was named: aquanetta.

i was SO bowled over by this that i just simply HAD to comment how fabulous and unusual a name she had — and she replied that her mother had just made it up and named her that because she thought it sounded pretty.

it just doesn’t get any better than “aquanetta”, baby.

*violet*

ps) a few years ago, i was perusing the aol baby naming message boards and read a posting from a woman who was planning on naming her poooooooooor, unfortunate baby girl the following:

cymburleigh (that’s right…as in KIMBERLY)

what is UP with these goddamned dolts and their inexplicable “unique” spelling obsession, anyway?

Prepare to be Calmly Dazzled!

After reading every word on your website, I realized that my contribution is fairly mundane, though I used to think it was the most pathetic name I had ever heard of. My co-worker’s 16 year old son and his girlfriend named their daughter Dazzlyn Serenity. Ye gods–babies naming babies. In a heartwarming example of perfect justice, the child, 3 years old now, is a little hellion and about as far from serene as it is possible to be.

Southern Accents

I attended the University of Mississippi in the 1980s, and there was an administrator there named Lady Love. She then proceeded to marry and use both her maiden and married name — and thus became Lady Love Long, which sounds a LOT like a porn movie to me.

Also — though there’s nothing wrong with these names in and of themselves — I went to high school with twin girls with names that, in their very Southern mother’s opinion, rhymed: Gail and Michelle.

Take That, Stupid Stars!

I laughed through your site, and have a name to add for you:

Starscreamer Anakin (normal last name).

This comes from a public school teacher friend, who mentioned other ‘wild’ names too, but I thought this one was way over-the-top. Maybe he can marry MaraJade (lastname)…

Adding Injury to Insult

I’m a cheerleading coach and I’ve had several children with interesting names.

One seemed to have no background story, her parents had simply named her Rover.

And another family had three children, two girls and a boy; and while I only taught the girls, their names were Faith, Hope, and Christian.

And finally, a girl I coached was named Oreo and her parents’ reasoning was that she was a biracial baby and that since the “white was inside the black,” the most appropriate name was Oreo.

E-I-E-I-Woah

The Mien People are from the mountains between Viet Nam and Cambodia. A bunch ended up in Oakland California and have been my students for years. Truly wonderful folks with exotic habits of child-naming.

name pronounced meaning
Kao. “cow” first born son
Kao Poo “cow-poo” second son
Mei “may” first daughter
Farm “farm” second daughter

(Note: This is a complete list of traditional Mien names, until you get to about your fifth kid.)

The Mien’s only have 12 last names. In Oakland, they only seem to have four, Saechao, Saelee, Saephong, Saepharn.

I have had classes with three boys named Kao Saechao. I have had classes where the calling the roll was something like singing “Old McDonald” Farm, Kao, Kao, Farm, Kao Poo, e-i-e-i-o.

Now throw in a few Dungs, the Laquieshas and D’Antes, and a Mongolia Algonkonkorn Buokongikon, and a Thai: Sirasak Tassanasuvanic.

Thank goodness Algonkonkorn Buokongikon interrupted me as I butchered his name and quickly said, “Call me Billy.”

All Rock! All the Time!

I went to college with a girl whose name was Webn 102.7. She was named for the radio station that the doctor was listening to when she was delivered. There was another girl named Wawanna Darlin. Her parents named her this because they always said, “We want a baby.”

Then, I work at a public office. This name came through our office just last week. A couple had a baby that they named Crystal Shanda Lear. I kid you not.

I know my name isn’t that common, either, but at least it’s not a radio station.

Make One More S’more Joke, Private…

Well, anyway, the reason I went searching for this type of website was because of an article in today’s NY Daily News. A reporter is in Bahgdad reporting on the war and he is with an infantry of marines. He quotes one marine; Captain Graham Cracker.

I guess it’s easy to figure out why he went into the military, where he can carry a gun. Someone’s gonna get their ass shot all because of this guy’s mother!

Thanks for the laughs!
